Is it right for me?

If you suffer from problems in your outer or middle ear, or if you are deaf on one side, an implant system like Ponto that uses the natural sound conduction properties of bone can help you hear.

To find out whether it’s the right solution for you, speak to your audiologist and doctor. They will test your hearing to see whether you are a suitable candidate. If so, you can try out a Ponto to experience this way of hearing and help you decide.

Try the Ponto sound

If your audiologist considers you a suitable candidate for a bone anchored hearing solution, you can try Ponto on a headband or soft band before committing to having the implant surgery. This lets you experience how bone conduction can improve hearing in your daily life.

The sound processor is attached to a band and sits behind your ear. As soon as you turn it on, it will capture the sounds around you and transmit them as vibrations through the bone, into your inner ear and on to the brain, where they are heard as sound.

Some people find this way of hearing gives them a level of sound quality they had forgotten was possible. Best of all, if you decide to have the implant surgery, you can expect even better sound quality.

Surgery

A safe and simple procedure

To experience the full benefits of the Ponto sound quality, you need to have the Ponto implant fitted in the bone behind your ear. This can be done by Minimally Invasive Ponto Surgery (MIPS), among other surgical techniques. The MIPS surgery is designed to remove the need for stitches. This means no scarring, quicker healing – and your hair will grow back just the way it was before.

The 3-4 mm titanium implant sits in the bone behind the ear with a discreet connection point, just slightly above the skin. This is where you attach the sound processor.

Put it on, hear the difference

Once the implant is stable, your audiologist can attach the sound processor for the first time. This is when you will finally be able to experience the renowned Ponto sound quality.

Unlike wearing the sound processor on a band, the Ponto implant gives the sound a direct pathway into the inner ear without the skin dampening it. This increases sound quality considerably. In fact, users often tell us that the sound is so natural sounding, they forget they’re even wearing a sound processor.
