Considering a bone conduction hearing implant?

Bone anchored hearing systems have helped hundreds of thousands of adults and children around the world. Today getting a bone anchored hearing system is a reliable, simple and proven procedure with life-changing results.

The bone anchored surgery is a small procedure that is done in minutes. A small titanium implant is surgically placed in the bone behind your ear. There is no need for stitches. The surgical procedure can often be performed under local anaesthesia. In most cases, it takes no more than a day or two away from work or school to recover from the procedure. Once the implant has integrated with your bone, you can begin using the sound processor.

Proven hearing excellence

Once the implant has integrated with the bone, you can start to use the sound processor. This is fitted by your audiologist who programs it to meet your individual need. Your audiologist will show you how it works, and which accessories can enhance your listening experience.

Is the surgery reversible?

Yes, the bone anchored surgery is fully reversible.

Can I try it to evaluate if this is a solution for me?

Yes, you are able to test the sound processor on a softband or headband before committing to have the implant surgery. You should try the sound processor in different daily situations to get an idea of what you’ll be able to hear. After implantation, most people enjoy better sound because of the direct pathway to the inner ear without skin dampening.

Can it damage my hearing?

No. The implant is placed away from your outer, middle and inner ear and can therefore not damage your hearing.

How do I look after the implant site?

In the first few weeks after surgery, it is very important to take good care of the skin around the implant site. When your skin has completely healed, it is important to continue your skincare routine. The Ponto Care guide will give you some tips and tricks for your life with Ponto.

Am I too old for surgery?

There is no upper age limit for getting an implant.

What happens during surgery?

The procedure is routine and usually lasts between 30 minutes and an hour. It can be performed under local anaesthetic and you can go home the same day. After surgery, you can expect to wear a bandage for a couple of days during which time you won’t be able to wash your hair.

When can I hear?

You can continue to use a Ponto on a Softband after surgery so you can hear until the implant is sufficiently integrated with the bone for the sound processor to be attached and activated. This is done by your audiologist. When activated, you can expect to experience an improvement in sound quality

What will my hair look like afterwards?

The Minimally Invasive Ponto Surgery (MIPS) has been designed to avoid the need for stitches, which reduces scarring and means your hair will grow back as it was before surgery.
