We do this in close cooperation with your BA service to ensure regulatory compliance, traceability and that the best hearing solution is provided for the patient.

Counselling is paramount and the in-clinic experience needs to be replicated when working from a distance. Below you can find useful tools and steps to go through when counselling a new patient online. Consider sending materials prior to appointment. Oticon Medical can assist with sending the relevant literature for you and support online if required.

What to remember

Counselling is important!
Patients who proceed with a bone conduction solution do so based on:

  • The initial discussion with you

  • Written information
Provide client with an information pack digitally.

  • Trial period
Program the device with the latest audiogram and remember to remind the patient to come in for fine tuning when possible. Send trial device to patient’s home with supporting materials. If desired, Oticon Medical can assist with sending the device and supporting materials.
Contact Oticon Medical  for more information

  • Meet other bone conduction users.
Would your patient like to talk to an implanted patient? Please advice your patient to contact Oticon Medical to be put in touch with and join one of the weekly sessions. Contact Oticon Medical. Your patient can also watch and read about user experiences with Ponto here .

Candidacy

Ponto sound processors are an ideal solution for conductive and mixed hearing losses* as well as single sided deafness**.

Download Quick candidacy guide

Audiogram and “The Speech Banana”

Explain hearing loss to the patient and in particular, what the BC results tell us about the mechanism of hearing.

Explain the principle of the Ponto™ System

Explain how bone anchored devices work and why the benefits to the patient are greater than a traditional aid.

Encourage Trial

The patient can trial the device on a Softband or a headband. The Ponto 5 Mini and the Ponto 4 are ideal for a trial with a conductive hearing loss. Ponto 3 SuperPower should be considered for larger mixed losses and single sided deafness. If in doubt, try both.

200x200-trial

The Ponto Softband gives candidates the opportunity to experience the Ponto System – with no surgery involved. The Ponto Softband is adjustable in size to fit snuggly and comfortably on a user’s head. Alternatively, there is a headband. For the best audiological outcomes when there is a significant sensorineural component or you are fitting an SSD patient consider using Ponto 3 SuperPower for your trial. For all others use Ponto 5 Mini.

Send a Ponto directly to the patient

Program the device with the latest BC audiogram if available and then send the device already attached to the softband directly to the patient. If you require fitting advice, please see fitting of sound processor section. Oticon Medical are happy to support longer trials to enable your patients to benefit from sound even in times of delayed surgery. Remember that some patients may prefer a headband to a softband.

Contact Oticon Medical  for more information.

Trial – pediatrics

With 14 different colours available, you can be sure to find a Ponto Softband that matches the style of your patient. It is also possible to personalize the sound processor with a wide range of skins and stickers.

The advantages of Direct Drive

After Ponto surgery, a healing cap is placed to protect the site. This will normally be in place for about 7 to 10 days. Your patient will be instructed how to care for the site and receive a Ponto Care Kit to help them. Remember to inform your patient about when to come in for removal of the healing cap and the next steps.

Checking the abutment site

The abutment and surrounding skin area should be checked to ensure the surgical site is healed, healthy, and ready for processor loading.

  • Try to gently rotate the abutment to check that it is stable. If the connection is not stable, refer the patient to a trained healthcare professional to have it tightened
  • Inspect the skin surrounding the abutment, and remove any debris around or on the inside of the abutment
  • Tell the patient that in the event of persistent soreness, he or she must contact the clinic. It is easier to treat skin irritations or infections at an early stage.
  • Download the Ponto care app with your patient and taking the first baseline photograph. Show them how to take the photos at home to monitor their site

Practise operating the sound processor

  • Explain the importance of keeping the coupling clear of hair and debris
  • Practise connecting and disconnecting the sound processor from the abutment
  • Practise operating the sound processor controls
  • Demonstrate sound processor features, such as volume control, push button, battery insertion and how to properly store the sound processor when not in use.

Detailed information on how to operate sound processor controls is included in the Instructions for Use. Additional information on sound processor features is included in the Product Information sheet.
